What monthly bookkeeping includes

How it works

  1. A short conversationJames asks about your business, your accounts and where the books stand today. You get a fixed monthly fee before anything starts.
  2. Setup or catch-upWe connect your bank and card feeds, clean up or rebuild the months you are missing, and reconcile everything to the statements.
  3. Every month after thatTransactions are posted and reconciled, you answer a handful of questions, and a clear profit and loss lands in your inbox.

Catch-up bookkeeping when you are behind

Plenty of Raleigh businesses come to us with a year or more of unrecorded transactions and a tax deadline approaching. That is fixable. We rebuild the missing months from bank and card statements, reconcile them, and bring you onto the monthly schedule. If unfiled business returns are part of the picture, James prepares those too, in the right order, so one problem does not create another. Clients describe the result the same way one review did: from a mess to organized and under control.

Small business bookkeeping services built for the way Raleigh businesses run

A repair shop, a framing crew and a cafe keep very different books. Parts versus labor, job costs versus overhead, tipped payroll versus salaried staff. We set the chart of accounts up for your kind of business so the monthly report answers the questions you actually have. See how that looks for auto repair shops, contractors and restaurants.

Why the books should live where the taxes are done

A bookkeeper who also prepares your tax return changes how the year ends. When one firm keeps the books and prepares the return, there is no January scramble to hand records to a separate tax preparer and no second person re-entering the same numbers. Your business tax return is built from books we already trust, and the Enrolled Agent who reviews those books every month is the one who signs the return. If the IRS ever asks a question about it, James answers, with the records already in order.

Not sure what state your books are in? That is a normal place to start. Tell James what you have, even if it is a shoebox and a bank login, and he will tell you what it takes to get current.

Payroll and sales tax, in the same set of books

Most bookkeeping clients add payroll so wages, withholdings and quarterly filings are posted automatically, and North Carolina sales tax is filed from the same ledger. One firm, one login, one set of numbers.

Questions clients ask

What does monthly bookkeeping include?

Each month we record and categorize your bank and credit card transactions, reconcile every account to its statement, post payroll and sales tax entries, and deliver a profit and loss statement and balance sheet. Questions about unusual transactions come to you once a month, not every day.

Our books are a year behind. Can you catch them up?

Yes. Catch-up bookkeeping is a large part of what we do for new clients. We rebuild the months you are missing from bank and card statements, reconcile them, and then move you onto the monthly schedule. If unfiled returns are part of the problem, James handles those too as an Enrolled Agent.

Do I need to use a particular bookkeeping software?

We work with the common small business platforms and will recommend one if you are starting fresh. Tell us what you use today and we will tell you whether to keep it.

How much does bookkeeping cost?

It depends on transaction volume, the number of accounts, and whether payroll and sales tax are included. After a short conversation about your business James quotes a fixed monthly figure, so you know the cost before you commit.

Do you only work with businesses in Raleigh?

Most of our bookkeeping clients are in Raleigh, Cary, Apex, Holly Springs, Clayton, Durham and Chapel Hill, but bookkeeping is done online, so location rarely matters. Our office at 4030 Wake Forest Rd is available for in-person meetings by appointment.

Will you also do my taxes?

Yes, and that is the point of keeping the books here. Clean monthly books mean your business return is prepared from numbers we already trust, and James, who reviews your books, is the Enrolled Agent who signs the return.
