Business Consulting in Raleigh, Grounded in Your Actual Numbers
Small business consulting is only useful when it comes from someone who has seen your books. James works with Raleigh business owners on the decisions that move the bottom line: what to charge, which jobs make money, when a hire pays for itself, how much to set aside for taxes, and when the structure of the business should change.
- Cash flow review and a forecast you can plan around
- Budgets and profitability reviews by service line or job
- Entity structure and reasonable salary decisions
- Tax projections so there are no April surprises
- Practical advice from an Enrolled Agent, not a slide deck

Talk through my business numbers
Tell us a little about your situation. James Cox III, EA, replies within one business day.
Every small business owner has a short list of decisions that matter: what to charge, who to hire, which work to turn down, how much to keep back for taxes. Consulting is sitting down with those decisions and your actual numbers, and leaving with an answer.
Where consulting helps
- Cash flow: why the bank balance does not match the profit on paper
- Pricing and margins by job, product or service line
- Budgets and forecasts you will actually look at
- Hiring: when an employee or subcontractor pays for themselves
- Entity structure, S corporation elections and reasonable salary
- Tax projections and quarterly estimates
- Equipment and vehicle purchases: buy, lease, and when
- Getting a business ready for a loan or a sale
How a consulting engagement works
- The questionYou tell James the decision you are facing. He asks for the last twelve months of financials, or uses the books if we already keep them.
- The reviewHe works through the numbers: margins, cash cycle, tax position, and what changes under each option.
- The answerA short, specific recommendation with the figures behind it, and a plan to carry it out. Ongoing clients get a quarterly review on top of their bookkeeping.
Cash flow management and forecasting
A profitable business can still run out of cash when customers pay in 45 days and suppliers want 15, when a slow season arrives, or when the owner draws against profit that has not been collected yet. Cash flow work maps when money actually arrives and leaves, builds a simple forecast, and shows how much cushion the business needs. It is the single most useful exercise most Raleigh small businesses have never done.
LLC vs S corporation, decided on your numbers
The question arrives in almost every consulting conversation. The short version: an LLC taxed as a sole proprietorship pays self-employment tax on all profit; an LLC taxed as an S corporation pays it only on the owner’s salary, but adds payroll and a separate S corp tax return. The crossover depends on your profit, what a reasonable salary is for your role, and your plans. James runs the comparison and, if the election makes sense, files it. New businesses get the same analysis through business formation.
Advice from someone who sees the books
Consulting is most useful when it comes from the firm that also does your bookkeeping and business taxes, because the advice is built on reconciled numbers and the tax consequences are already in view. James is an IRS Enrolled Agent; every recommendation is checked against what it does to your return. Businesses that want this every month rather than by the project move to fractional CFO services.
Talk through my business numbersQuestions clients ask
What does a business consulting engagement look like?
Usually a review of your last twelve months of financials, a conversation about where you want the business to go, and then a short list of specific changes: pricing, expense cuts, a tax move, a hire or a structure change. Ongoing clients get a quarterly review alongside their bookkeeping.
Is this the same as CFO services?
Consulting is project-based: one decision or one review. CFO services are ongoing monthly oversight of cash, forecasts and reporting for businesses that have outgrown bookkeeping alone. Many clients start with consulting and move to CFO support as they grow.
Can you help me decide between an LLC and an S corporation?
Yes. It is one of the most common questions we get and the answer depends on your profit level, how you pay yourself and your plans for the business. James runs the comparison on your own numbers.
Do I have to be a bookkeeping client?
No, but it helps. Advice built on reconciled monthly books is more accurate than advice built on a bank balance and a feeling.
